Wisdom Teeth Removal in Orange County: What to Expect

Wisdom Teeth Removal in Orange County: What to Expect

Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common dental procedures in the country — and one of the most anxiety-provoking. If your dentist has recently told you that one (or all four) of your wisdom teeth should come out, you're not alone. Most people have questions: Will it hurt? How long is recovery? Do I really need this?

Here's a clear, honest guide for Orange County patients — from consultation to full recovery.

What Are Wisdom Teeth, and Why Are They Often a Problem?

Wisdom teeth — your third molars — are the last teeth to develop, typically appearing between ages 17 and 25. Some people never get them; others develop one to four (occasionally more).

The issue is space. Our jaws have become smaller over generations, but our teeth haven't. When a wisdom tooth doesn't have enough room to erupt fully, it becomes impacted — stuck partially or completely beneath the gum line, sometimes pressing against the neighboring molar.

Common problems impacted wisdom teeth cause:

  • Jaw pain, swelling, or tenderness at the back of the mouth
  • Crowding that nudges other teeth out of alignment
  • Recurring infections in the gum tissue around the tooth (pericoronitis)
  • Cavities in hard-to-clean areas
  • Cysts or damage to adjacent molar roots

That said, not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. If yours has erupted fully, sits in good position, and is easy to keep clean, it may be fine. The only way to know for certain is a dental evaluation with X-rays.

How Dr. Elies Kim Evaluates Your Wisdom Teeth

At Goodday Dental Care, we use digital X-rays and CBCT 3D imaging to get a precise picture of your wisdom teeth — their position, angle, root development, and proximity to nearby structures like the inferior alveolar nerve. This gives you a clear, evidence-based answer rather than a guesswork recommendation.

Signs that extraction is typically recommended:

  • The tooth is impacted or only partially erupted
  • You're experiencing recurring pain or swelling in the back of your jaw
  • There's gum inflammation or infection around the tooth
  • Adjacent teeth show early signs of crowding or root damage
  • A cyst has formed around the tooth's crown

We often recommend proactive removal for patients in their late teens or early 20s, before the roots are fully formed — extraction is technically easier and recovery is faster at this stage.

What the Extraction Procedure Involves

Wisdom tooth extractions at our Orange and Anaheim offices are performed with local anesthesia. Sedation options are available for patients who want a more relaxed experience.

Simple Extractions

If the tooth has fully erupted with a straightforward root structure, the process is similar to any other tooth removal. The area is numbed, the tooth is gently rocked and loosened, and removed. Most patients are surprised by how little they feel during the procedure.

Surgical Extractions (Impacted Teeth)

Impacted teeth require a small incision in the gum to expose the tooth or the bone covering it. The tooth may be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal. The entire procedure typically takes 20 to 45 minutes per tooth.

Dr. Elies Kim will walk you through exactly what's needed for your case at your pre-procedure consultation — no surprises on the day.

Recovery: What the First 72 Hours Look Like

Recovery is the part patients worry most about — and where careful follow-through pays off.

What to expect right after the procedure:

  • Gauze pads to control light bleeding for the first one to two hours
  • Swelling and jaw stiffness that peaks around day two or three
  • Mild to moderate soreness, manageable with prescribed or OTC pain relievers
  • Some pink-tinted saliva for the first 24 hours — normal and expected

Do this:

  • Rest for the remainder of the day
  • Apply ice packs (20 minutes on, 20 off) for the first 24 hours
  • Eat soft foods: yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, smoothies (no straw)
  • Stay well hydrated with water
  • Rinse gently with warm saltwater starting day two

Avoid this:

  • Straws — suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket
  • Smoking or vaping for at least 72 hours (ideally longer)
  • Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods for the first week
  • Vigorous rinsing or spitting the first day
  • Strenuous exercise for 48 to 72 hours

Most patients return to light activity within one to two days and feel back to normal within a week to ten days.

Dry Socket: What It Is and How to Prevent It

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is the most common post-extraction complication. It happens when the protective blood clot is disrupted before the socket has healed — exposing the underlying bone and nerve.

Symptoms appear two to four days after extraction: sharp, radiating jaw pain, sometimes extending to the ear, along with a bad taste or odor. If this happens, contact our office immediately. We'll treat the socket with a medicated dressing that brings fast relief.

Prevention is straightforward: no straws, no smoking, no spitting, and follow your post-op instructions closely.

When to Call Our Office

Most wisdom tooth recoveries go smoothly, but reach out right away if you notice:

  • Severe pain that doesn't respond to medication after day two or three
  • Heavy bleeding that doesn't slow with gentle pressure
  • Fever above 100.4°F
  • Swelling that's getting worse after day three
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
