The Comprehensive New Patient Exam

Your first appointment at Goodday Dental Care isn't just a quick look in the mirror. It's a full oral health evaluation designed to catch what casual inspection misses. Here's what that includes:

Medical and Dental History Review

Dr. Kim or one of our hygienists will go through your health history with you before anything else. This step is more important than it sounds — conditions like diabetes, acid reflux, sleep apnea, and certain medications can significantly affect your teeth and gums. We ask because it shapes the care you receive, not out of habit.

Gum Health Evaluation

Using a small periodontal probe, we gently measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth. This is how we detect early gum disease — often long before you feel any symptoms yourself. Caught early, gum disease is very manageable. Caught late, treatment becomes more involved.

Tooth-by-Tooth Examination

Every tooth gets individual attention. We're checking for decay, cracks, wear patterns, and existing restorations that may need updating. We also evaluate your bite — how your upper and lower teeth come together. A misaligned bite can silently contribute to jaw pain, teeth grinding, and premature chipping over years.

Oral Cancer Screening

At every new patient visit, we perform a brief visual and tactile screening for early signs of oral cancer. It takes under two minutes and is one of those checks where catching something early makes an enormous difference.

Digital X-Rays: Seeing What Eyes Alone Can't

Most new patients receive a full series of digital X-rays on their first visit. We use digital radiography — which means images appear instantly on-screen, use a fraction of the radiation of traditional film, and allow us to zoom in and show you exactly what we're looking at in real time.

If you've had X-rays taken recently at another office, let us know. We may be able to accept recent images and avoid redundant scans. For patients who need more detailed evaluation — particularly for implant planning — CBCT (3D cone beam) imaging is available at our offices when clinically indicated.

Your Cleaning — or the Plan That Comes First

When your gum health is in good shape, your first visit will include a professional cleaning: removing calculus and plaque buildup, polishing enamel, and reviewing brushing and flossing technique with you.

If we find signs of gum disease or significant tartar below the gumline, we may recommend a deeper cleaning — scaling and root planing — before a standard polish. We will always explain why, what it involves, and what it costs before anything additional is scheduled.

One thing we don't do: surprise you with procedures. Everything gets discussed first.

Your Personalized Treatment Plan

After the exam, Dr. Kim will sit down with you and walk through her findings clearly — no rushed explanations, no assumptions about what you already know. If any follow-up treatment is recommended, she'll cover:

• What each procedure is and why it's being recommended
• Priority order: what needs attention now versus what can be monitored
• Your estimated out-of-pocket costs given your insurance plan
• Alternatives and honest tradeoffs, when they exist
