If you're 65 or older and living in Orange County, you've probably done the math on Medicare. You've chosen your plan, maybe added a Medigap supplement, and you feel reasonably covered — until you sit down in the dental chair.
Here's the reality that surprises most new Medicare enrollees: Original Medicare does not cover routine dental care. Not cleanings. Not fillings. Not crowns. Not dentures. And certainly not dental implants. For millions of seniors across the country, this comes as a genuine shock.
The good news is that you have real options — and understanding them can save you both money and worry. Whether you're a patient at our Orange or Anaheim office, this guide will walk you through what's actually available to seniors so you can protect both your smile and your budget.
What Original Medicare (Parts A & B) Covers — and Doesn't
Medicare Part A covers hospital stays and inpatient services. Part B covers outpatient medical care. But neither Part A nor Part B covers routine dental services, which Medicare defines broadly as:
- Routine dental exams and cleanings
- Fillings
- Tooth extractions (except when medically necessary before a covered medical procedure)
- Dentures and dental appliances
- Dental implants
- Crowns, bridges, and veneers
There is one narrow exception: Medicare may cover dental care directly tied to a covered medical procedure. If you need a tooth extraction before radiation therapy for oral cancer, or before heart valve replacement surgery, Medicare may cover that specific extraction as part of the broader medical treatment. But this is the exception — not the rule.
For your routine twice-yearly cleanings, a crown on a cracked molar, or implants to replace missing teeth, Original Medicare leaves you responsible for the full cost.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): Where Dental Benefits Live
This is where things get considerably more promising. Medicare Advantage plans — also called Part C — are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, and many of them bundle dental coverage into the package alongside medical, vision, and hearing benefits.
The scope of dental benefits varies significantly by plan, but common tiers look like this:
Basic (Preventive) Coverage
- Two cleanings per year
- Routine X-rays
- Oral exams
Enhanced Coverage (Available on Many Plans)
- Fillings and simple extractions
- Crowns (often at 50% after a waiting period)
- Partial or full dentures
- Periodontal (gum) treatment on some plans
A few important caveats to keep in mind:
- Annual maximums — Most Medicare Advantage dental benefits cap out between $1,000 and $2,500 per year, so major work may still require out-of-pocket spending.
- Waiting periods — Some services require 6–12 months after enrollment before they're covered.
- In-network rules — Not all dentists accept all Medicare Advantage plans. If you're considering a plan, verify that your dentist is in-network before you enroll.
- Plan-to-plan variation — Two MA plans in the same ZIP code can have dramatically different dental benefits. Shop carefully during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7).
If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, call the member services number on your card and ask: "What dental services are covered, what is my annual maximum, and is Goodday Dental Care in-network?" Our front desk team at both the Orange and Anaheim offices can also help you verify your benefits when you call to schedule.
Stand-Alone Dental Plans for Original Medicare Enrollees
If you're on Original Medicare (without Medicare Advantage), you can purchase a stand-alone private dental insurance plan — similar to what you may have had through an employer.
Monthly premiums for seniors typically run $20–$50 for a basic PPO plan. These plans generally cover:
- Preventive care (cleanings, exams, X-rays) at 100%
- Basic restorative work (fillings) at 70–80%
- Major work (crowns, extractions) at 50%, usually after a deductible and waiting period
- Annual maximums of $1,000–$2,000
If you had employer dental insurance, check whether you can continue it through COBRA or whether your former employer offers retiree dental benefits before letting that coverage lapse — a gap-free transition is almost always better than starting over with a new plan's waiting periods.
What About Medi-Cal?
For seniors who qualify based on income, we accept Medi-Cal at Goodday Dental Care. Coverage varies by eligibility category; our team can help confirm what's available on your specific plan when you call.
How Our Team Helps You Navigate the Coverage Maze
Dr. Elies Kim and the team at Goodday Dental Care see patients at both our Orange and Anaheim locations, and we hear the same coverage questions every week. When you call to schedule — or come in for your first visit — our front desk will:
- Verify your coverage — whether it's Medicare Advantage, a stand-alone PPO, or another plan
- Explain your benefits in plain language — what's covered, what your share will be, and where your annual maximum sits
- Help you prioritize treatment — if your annual benefit limit is modest, we'll help sequence care so the most critical work happens first and you get the most from your plan
We know dental costs matter more when you're on a fixed income. Our goal is full transparency: you'll know the costs before any treatment begins, and we'll work with you to find a care plan that fits.
The Bottom Line for Orange County Seniors
Medicare's dental coverage gap is one of retirement's most frustrating surprises. But with the right plan in place — Medicare Advantage with dental benefits, a stand-alone PPO, or Medi-Cal for those who qualify — you can keep up with regular dental care and catch small problems before they become expensive ones.
If you're unsure what your current coverage includes, start with a conversation with our team. We see patients at our Orange office (1518 E Lincoln Ave, 657-282-0078) and our Anaheim office (2795 W Lincoln Ave Ste D, 714-229-8553). New patients are always welcome, and we'll make sure you understand your options before you sit in the chair.
