The Dental Implant Process: What to Expect in Goodday Dental Care

Losing a tooth affects more than your smile. Over time, a gap changes how you chew, how you speak, and even the shape of your jawbone as it begins to shrink around the empty space. Dental implants have become the gold standard for tooth replacement because they look, feel, and function like the real thing — and with the right care, they can last a lifetime.

Still, if you've never had an implant, the process can feel mysterious. How many appointments does it take? Will it hurt? How long before you have a finished tooth? At Goodday Dental Care in Orange and Anaheim, Dr. Elies Kim walks every patient through the steps before anything begins. Here's an honest, complete look at what the dental implant process actually involves.

What Is a Dental Implant, Really?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed surgically into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth's root. Over the following months, the surrounding bone grows around it — a natural process called osseointegration — anchoring it as firmly as any natural root. A custom ceramic crown is then attached on top, completing the restoration.

Unlike traditional dentures, implants don't slip or require adhesives. Unlike dental bridges, they don't require grinding down healthy neighboring teeth. For most patients, dental implants in Goodday Dental Care are the best treatment that replace your missing tooth that can replicate your natural tooth.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Most healthy adults qualify. At your first consultation, Dr. Kim will assess:

A 3D CBCT scan is often taken at this stage to map bone volume precisely and plan implant placement with accuracy.

The Step-by-Step Implant Process

Step 1: Consultation and Imaging

Your first visit is all about evaluation. Dr. Kim examines your teeth and gums, reviews your medical history, and takes digital X-rays or a CBCT scan. You'll leave with a clear treatment plan, a realistic timeline, and a written cost estimate — no surprises.

Step 2: Tooth Extraction (If Needed)

If the damaged or infected tooth is still in place, it needs to come out before the implant can go in. In some cases — where bone quality is ideal — the implant can be placed the same day as the extraction (called "immediate placement"). Dr. Kim will let you know whether this applies to your situation.

Step 3: Bone Grafting with PRF and Sticky Bone (If Needed)

If your jawbone has thinned or shrunk from long-term tooth loss, a bone graft creates the solid foundation the implant needs. Bone graft material is placed in the gap and left to integrate over several months before implant placement proceeds.

At Goodday Dental Care, we provide procedure called PRF with Sticky bone, which we collect plasma from patient's blood and mixes with the bonegraft, which creates the PRF with Sticky bone. Currently, PRF with Sticky bone is considered the best materials in GBR/Bonegrafting due to it's mixture with patient's own plasma makes it better result in adaptation.

Not every patient needs this step, but when it's indicated, skipping it leads to implant failure. Dr. Kim is straightforward about whether it applies to you.

Step 4: Implant Placement

With the jawbone ready, the titanium post is placed surgically in a procedure that typically takes 30–60 minutes per implant. Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout, and most patients are surprised by how manageable the experience is. Expect some mild soreness and swelling for a few days afterward — usually managed easily with over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses.

Step 5: Osseointegration — The Healing Phase

This is the phase that requires the most patience. Over the next 3–6 months, bone cells gradually fuse with the titanium post, giving it its permanent stability. During this time, a temporary crown or partial denture keeps you functional and confident at work, at dinner, anywhere.

The body is doing its best work here. Rushing this phase — or placing too much stress on the implant too soon — can disrupt the fusion. Trust the timeline.

Step 6: Abutment Placement

Once osseointegration is confirmed (usually via X-ray), a small connector called an abutment is attached to the top of the implant post. This piece is what the final crown will anchor to. A brief healing period of one to two weeks follows as the gum tissue settles around the abutment.

Step 7: Final Crown Placement

A digital scan or impression is taken of your bite and the surrounding teeth, then sent to a dental lab. The custom-crafted crown — matched to the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth — is seated onto the abutment and checked for fit and bite alignment. At this point, the process is complete.

Your dental implant in Orange, CA is indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Brush and floss it just like the rest of your smile.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

A straightforward case — no extractions, no bone grafting — runs about 4 to 6 months from implant placement to final crown. Cases requiring extractions or bone grafting can extend to 9 to 18 months total.

Every patient is different. Dr. Kim builds individualized timelines so you know what to expect at each stage.

What About Cost and Insurance?

Dental implants in Orange County typically range from $3,000 to $5,000 per tooth, all-inclusive. PPO dental insurance plans sometimes cover a portion of the procedure — particularly the crown — though coverage varies significantly by plan. Medi-Cal does not currently cover implants.

At Goodday Dental Care, we provide a transparent, itemized cost breakdown before any treatment begins. Financing options are also available so that cost doesn't become a barrier to care you genuinely need.
