Dental Emergency in Orange or Anaheim? Here's What to Do
A cracked tooth at Sunday dinner. A knocked-out molar on the soccer field. Sharp pain that jolts you awake at 2 a.m. Dental emergencies don't schedule themselves around convenient timing — and knowing what to do in the first 30 minutes can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing it permanently.
Here's a practical guide to handling the most common dental emergencies, what actually counts as urgent, and how to get fast help from your emergency dentist in Orange or Anaheim.
What Counts as a True Dental Emergency?
Not every dental concern needs same-day care — but some absolutely do. Waiting too long on the following can turn a fixable problem into a complex and costly one.
True emergencies — call us immediately:
- A knocked-out permanent tooth
- A cracked or fractured tooth with severe pain or jagged edges
- A dental abscess (swollen jaw, fever, or visible pus — this can become dangerous if untreated)
- Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth or gums
- Severe, persistent toothache not responding to over-the-counter pain relief
Can usually wait a day or two:
- Minor chip with no pain or sensitivity
- Lost retainer or nightguard
- Mild sensitivity without visible damage
If you're unsure, call us and describe your symptoms. Our team will tell you whether to come in the same day or schedule a routine appointment.
Knocked-Out Tooth: Act Within 30 Minutes
A completely dislodged permanent tooth is the highest-urgency emergency in dentistry. The window for successful reimplantation is narrow — survival rates drop sharply after 30–60 minutes out of the socket.
Do this immediately:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part) — never handle the root
- Rinse gently with clean water — do NOT scrub or use soap
- store the tooth in a small container of milk — or tuck it between your cheek and gum to keep it moist in saliva
- Call our Orange office at (657) 282-0078 or Anaheim office at (714) 229-8553 immediately, then head straight in
Time is everything here. A tooth that arrives within 30 minutes has a dramatically better prognosis for reimplantation than one that's been dry for two hours. Don't stop at a pharmacy — call first, drive second.
Cracked or Chipped Tooth
How you respond depends on severity.
Minor chips
A small chip with no pain and no sharp edge isn't an emergency — but schedule an appointment within a few days. Left alone, small chips can develop into larger cracks over time.
Major cracks or fractures
If you have a crack with sharp edges, pain when biting, or visible damage near the gum line, treat it as urgent. While you're on the way:
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Cover jagged edges with over-the-counter dental wax or sugarless gum
- Take ibuprofen as directed for pain
At Goodday Dental Care, Dr. Elies Kim will assess whether a crown, bonding, or — if the crack extends to the root — root canal therapy is the right path. For more on what the crown process looks like, see our overview of dental crowns.
Toothache and Dental Abscess
A throbbing toothache that isn't easing with ibuprofen or acetaminophen is your mouth asking for help. An untreated abscess — a bacterial infection at the tooth root or in the gum — can spread to your jaw, neck, or beyond. It's rare, but serious.
Signs of an abscess:
- Persistent throbbing pain that radiates to your ear or jaw
- Swelling in your cheek or jaw
- Fever or general illness
- A pimple-like bump on the gum near the painful tooth
- A bad or salty taste from drainage
If you have facial swelling with fever, go directly to an emergency room and call us to coordinate follow-up dental care. If swelling is present but you feel otherwise okay, call our Orange or Anaheim office as early as possible — we hold time for urgent cases daily.
Lost Crown or Filling
A gap where your crown used to be is alarming but usually manageable.
What to do:
- Retrieve the crown if you can — bring it to your appointment
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Call us so we can work you in quickly
One caution: don't use super glue or household adhesives to recement a crown. They're not biocompatible and can damage the underlying tooth structure.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Cuts inside the mouth bleed more than wounds elsewhere — oral tissue is highly vascular. Most heal on their own.
- Apply firm pressure with clean gauze for 10–15 minutes
- Go to urgent care or an ER if bleeding won't stop after 20 minutes, or if the wound is deep and gaping
- If teeth or jaw are involved, call us — we'll coordinate with your care
